Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery offers eligible patients a variety of benefits over traditionally more invasive surgical procedures.
Most people are candidates for robotic surgery, but it may not be right for everyone. Only you and your doctor can decide whether surgery is right for you. Before making a decision, it is important to be aware of all treatment options, as well as your physician's experience as a da Vinci surgeon.
Here are some general guidelines to help determine if robotic-assisted surgery may be right for you:
-
Adults: Robotic-assisted surgery is often appealing to young and middle-aged adults with pressing career and family responsibilities. These patients are often attracted by the "high tech" aspect of robotic surgery, as well as by the rapid recovery it offers
-
Elderly patients: The advantages of robotic-assisted surgery for patients over 60 are demonstrated by better post-operative heart and pulmonary function, less pain, fewer complications of surgery and shorter hospital stays
In the absence of clear contraindications almost all types of surgery that can be performed laparoscopically can be done with robotic-assisted surgery.
As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is unique to each patient and procedure. The da Vinci Surgical System is considered safe and effective, but may not be appropriate for everyone. Always talk to your doctor about all treatment options, as well as the associated benefits and risks.
