Mercy Cardiac Surgeon Frank Slachman, MD,
to Climb Seventh Summit in Antarctica
Sacramento, CA, November 17, 2011 - You could say that Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute Cardiac Surgeon Frank Slachman, MD, has been on top of the world six times. He's climbed the highest mountain peaks on six continents and he's prepared to climb his seventh and final summit, Mount Vinson, in Antarctica.
Dr. Slachman says he decided to climb his first summit, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, while on safari in Tanzania with his son eight years ago. After that, came Aconcagua, South America; Denali, North America; Kosciuszko, Australia; Mount Everest, Asia; and Elbrus, Europe. He leaves for Antarctica after the holidays.
He says the best thing about climbing mountains is the camaraderie of coming together with strangers in a climbing group who have this single purpose of getting to the top.
Sacramento Bee Features Reporter Sam McManis interviewed Dr. Slachman about his experiences climbing mountains. He also interviewed Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute Cardiac Surgeon John Dein, MD, who has climbed several western mountains with Dr. Slachman, including Mount Ranier.
