Mission Statement
Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team of committed and compassionate professionals through collaboration, a continuum based approach to care, disease management programs, research and innovations, stewardship of resources and education.

Mercy's Stroke Program
What's done in the first minutes or hours after a stroke may determine the level of recovery the person will achieve. That's why Mercy treats every incoming stroke patient as an emergency. Patients arriving in the Emergency Department experiencing stroke symptoms are evaluated for possible treatment with t-PA or evaluated for one of the stroke investigational medicines. Mercy's emergency medicine physicians have been trained in the assessment of acute stroke patients and work in collaboration with our stroke neurologists.

With 750,000 cases nationwide each year, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of disability in adults. As a nationally recognized leader in stroke care, Mercy provides integrated services in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. The Mercy Stroke Center is part of a Sacramento-wide network responding in-person to acute stroke emergencies. Dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes, Mercy participates in ongoing clinical research for advance stroke care.

To provide advanced, comprehensive care for patients with stroke, the Mercy Stroke Intervention team consists of a neurologist specializing in stroke and a stroke nurse specialist. This team can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Other members of the Mercy team include: physical, speech and occupational therapists; dietitians; case managers and social workers. The team also relies on the excellent services of Mercy's lab, pharmacy and radiology (imaging) departments.

All six of Mercy Neurological Institute of Greater Sacramento's hospitals have been nationally recognized by The Joint Commission as Primary Stroke Centers. What's more, in 2004, Mercy General Hospital and Mercy San Juan Medical Center became two of the first hospitals in the state to earn The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval? for stroke care by demonstrating that their stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.

Mercy's program is unique in that it offers patients an extensive continuum of care, from exceptional Emergency Department care to in-house acute rehabilitation. Mercy is at the cutting edge of stroke treatment, thanks to its clinical research program that allows patients to receive the most dynamic care from the most highly trained physicians and nurses.
